I was on jury duty a couple of weeks ago and when I had reported to the summons, I wore nice slacks and a shirt. I was picked due to the answers that I gave to both defense and prosecuting attorneys when questioned during the jury picking process.
I want the experience of being a juror and participating in the process. It's something very different from my typical routine.
Be careful what you wish for. My friend got picked. It was a gruesome trial that will forever haunt her.
I think how you dress will just be a small part of it, what you say and how you act will determine if you are picked.
I immediately had to bow out on my Jury Duty. The defendant was a friend of a friend of mine. I had been at wedding receptions and such with her. My son had had an appointment with her once (she is a doctor).
I would not have been able to fairly judge her.
I have been called multiple times, but never was even asked any questions. Typically, they have 40 or so (way too many) potential jurors, so the odds of getting chosen are not very high.
Dress nicely on the first day - conservative skirt/dress or slacks and flat shoes. Don't show cleavage or any part of your ass. Be respectable. Once you are selected for the jury, dress comfortably from then on. Jeans are fine so long as they're clean and without holes. Sneakers are also acceptable. A nice blouse or sweater.
If you want to be selected, do not read the WSJ or NY Times, shows you're intelligent. A coat and tie will usually get you a pass. And if asked if you would favor the word of an officer over the defendant, say no. That one got me off the last time.
I wore a suit as I was going back to work if they let out early (it's always come and go, wait, go in, wait, go home...).
I was the foreperson. While I don't want to go back again, it was very interesting and a huge responsibility.

I have served on three juries: an assault case and two DUIs. One ended abruptly in a mistrial. How much of a hassle it is totally depends on where you live and how they run the court.
Here they choose you for the pool well in advance, and you only have to report for one week. They have a phone number you call the night before to see if you have to report. It just depends on the case load.
As long as you are not a total weirdo or idiot, you have a chance of being chosen.
Mikala is right about it being a big responsibility. You are in a room with a person whose fate is in your hands. Voting "guilty or not guilty," absolutely yes or no, is not something most people have to do on a daily basis.
