I ask because my niece's sixteenth birthday is coming up and the number one thing she requested was new clothes. My niece attends a private school, and my sister is very strict about what type of clothes she can wear. The time I have seen her dressed in regular attire, she dresses like a grandma or a nun lol.
My niece hates her current wardrobe and wants more clothes like her friends. The problem is I don't really know how teenage girls dress now in days, specifically in California where my niece resides. Any helpful ideas will be greatly appreciated. Please don't suggest any grandma clothing and more "cute" clothes as my niece says lol.
Presumably if/when you go shopping you'll see other Juniors shopping, look at them (as well as others you see on the street, etc.) - as well as the styles the stores are selling.
Get a couple of Seventeen magazines, and see what the popular looks are. Crop tops with shorts seem to be a thing. No wonder the girl's mother doesn't let her buy that kind of stuff. Do you know what the school's dress code is? Are they required to wear skirts, or can they wear jeans? You could call the school to ask what the dress code is.
Ask her what her friends wear. In northern California, teen girls just wear jeans, like teen girls always have. Is your niece in southern CA?
Southern California, as for her friends most of them seem to wear short shorts which I have already bought some short shorts for my niece. I am looking more for specific brand names and stores that are universally popular with teen girls specifically in California. May be its because I am closer in age to my niece ( we are only ten years apart), I think my sister is waaaay too strict about what my niece can or cannot wear. She doesn't even let her wear yoga pants! Any suggestions are fine with me as long as the clothing doesn't have any vulgar images/writing on it, it covers her private areas enough, and isn't too wacky looking.
For spring, I suggest a ruffled top, flats, and skinny jeans. Abercrombie, H&M, Forever 21, and Hollister are in style among Californian women. Just making a guess.

Is Juicy no longer popular? I think you're onto something. Ralph Lauren has a teen line, too. And Tommy Hilfiger.

I'm male, age 22. My fashion knowledge for women comes from peeking at chics . I have no Idea what women under 18 wear. As for Tommy H, its my favorite brand.
Thanks for the suggestions, so far I have picked up some "cute'" clothing from Forever 21 and Victoria Secret. That should be enough for her, I don't have a whole lot of money to spend.

When birthday and Christmas roll around, you can get cheap but trendy fashionable clothes from some of the above-listed brands from Macy's during their sales. They have fabulous sales, especially leading up to Xmas, and also at the end of the summer season. (Jan/Feb are their biggest discount months.) They also have sales once/week all year. Macy's is a bonanza, and they've recently re-focussed their merchandizing on the teen and 20-something market.
