I guess that you've never heard of the terms, a fresh coat of paint on a barn or lipstick on a pig ?

Referring back to the original question relates to cause and effect. It is a matter of economics.

"Why is it that the more cosmopolitan a person is the more beautiful they are?"

Large metropolitan areas have large economies. There is more opportunity to reward beautiful people so that's where many beautiful people go.

Simple as that.

Beauty truly IS in the eye of the beholder and it is very subjective. Not to imply that there aren't more beautiful people in the city OR in the country. I think if you are looking for either inner or outer beauty it depends on where you look within, the city or country. Probably because there are just MORE people period in a cities, including country people that go there to shop, work, enjoy the cultures may give an impression that overall there are more beautiful people.

There is a huge, continuing world-wide trend where the best and brightest are moving to the cities. Including in America. Nothing more really needs to be said.

- More stores
- More people with office jobs, more commuting
- More pressure to be 'presentable'
- More women
- More gays
- More dermatologists
- More beauty parlors and hair salons
- More tourists and visitors
- More bars and clubs
- More ethnic diversity
- More peer pressure
- More foot traffic and outdoor cafes

If by ;Northern Europe' you mean Scandinavia, I've been there many times. No offense to anyone, but not everyone in those areas is tall, thin, beautiful, and blonde. They've got overweight and ugly people there too...lots of them.

A few additional causes for 'prettier' people in urban than rural areas:

- More food choices
- More gyms
- More yoga studios and bike paths
- More parks
- More ladies of the night
- More gold diggers
- More gigolos
- More desperate singles
- More adultery
- More casting couches
- More shallowness
- More botox, implants, collagen fillers
- More wigs and hair plugs
- Tighter clothing
- More money
- More form than function

also in densely populated cities you will see people more often out in public view, more sidewalk cafes, fancy malls & shopping centers, and big cities always have big events that bring large crowds and you see a lot of diversity out there, a great place to do people watching because something is always going on in the big city

in small towns there isnt much to bring large crowds, you just dont see many people out in public, unless your a regular at WALMART , shopping at Walmart is probably the biggest event most people in small towns ever experience and we all know the strange shoppers in Walmart.

small towns are not the place to look for beautiful people, lots of small town girls actually move to the big city hoping to find a man.

people that stay in small towns often marry very young or just out of high school, lots of unskilled laborers

and migrant workers in small towns

Not saying that only ugly people live in rural areas. Have seen hotties in the middle of no where but just very few of them.

Is it Competition? more current with trends? Aren't people in the city typically busier and should theoretically have less time to groom themselves and are generally more stressed out, no?

Competition and access to better clothes, hairdressers, emphasis upon fitness - being 30lbs overweight is OK in the "burbs, but frowned upon in major metro areas.

I've often said that people in NYC and LA look airbrushed. And perhaps some are.
