I wash EVERYTHING before wearing it - whether it's new or used.

as do I, but it appears that some people only wash their underwear prior to the first wearing, and then just keep wearing it, sans laundering. I can't understand that type of inattention to hygiene, but guess that I can add that behavior to the growing list of things that I no longer understand.

I work in a thrift store. You would be amazed at how often new clothing is donated. We're a local charity, and very well supported by the community because the donations are used to support families in our area. I still buy things like underwear and shoes at retail, and most of my pants because I'm tall. But I can't remember the last time I paid full price for a dress or a top. The dirty or damaged stuff never hits the sales floor, it's recycled.

Well, if you wash a NEW top from Macy's, or Dillards, it's very likely it will be ruined and you will miss the entire value of that top, with the first washing.

If I buy clothing new, there is absolutely no way I'm going to wash it before wearing it, because the value of the top has depreciated about 75% with the first washing.

That's just wrong on so many levels...

I can't believe this is even a question.

Clothes that are sold "new" in retail stores have been tried on many times, by many people. Some have been worn and returned.

Actually, we often DO take our own bed, our own tableware, our own cooking utensils, our own groceries, and even our own water.
We have a Recreational Vehicle; a Class A motorhome. Having our own bed, etc. is one of the reasons for having such a fuel hog!
Balancing the cost of a mid-range motel room plus meals and fuel with the cost of a campground/RV park plus fuel and groceries, economically it is a wash, but our own bed, etc.? THAT is priceless!
