If you have a shade of gray that is yellowish and not very vibrant, try Mrs. Stewart's laundry bluing along with your shampoo. Get your hair wet and sudsy then a squirt of laundry bluing. Everything will turn bright blue, but it washes out and your yellowish gray will be sparkling silver. The bottle says for laundry and white pets, it also works on gray and white hair. Nice and inexpensive for folks on a budget, too.
That's hilarious! I found three bottles of this in my Mom's bathroom when I cleaned out her stuff. Wonder if she used to use this on HER (absolutely beautiful) ice-white hair?
"Overall I do it because it makes me feel good about myself..."
I really don't mean to beat this dead horse, well, to death, but again... Would you feel BAD about yourself if your hair were left natural? If so, why? The message seems to be that there's something wrong with it, and I'm (unsuccessfully) arguing that there isn't. It makes you feel GOOD to dye it because, obviously, you perceive something BAD in not dying it (you'd feel old, unattractive, frumpy, etc.)...
As for Clinton, remember that she wasn't exactly a "dish" even in her 20s!
At any rate, different strokes; it's still a free country, thank goodness. I just try to be cognizant of what motivates me to do things before I do them. "The unexamined life is not worth living."

A lot people still take their cues from subliminal advertising messages. Remember the old TV commercial, "Is it true blondes have more fun?" Lady Clairol thought so.

I'm with you, otter. What's WRONG with women anyway? Are we somehow defective that we have to constantly strive to be thinner, younger, tighter, perkier, flawless, amazing, stunning, more fit, more tan?! As if our only value in life can come from being painted up like little dolls, ornaments that are pretty to look at whose purpose in life is to be eye candy for men?
So while men spend their free time doing what they consider fun, interesting, challenging: hobbies, sports, adventure, whatever; many women spend their free time at the gym, at the plastic surgeons being sucked, tucked and injected; at the spa, hair salon, nail salon. In a tanning bed changing our color. Getting waxed, colored, bleached, plucked, PERFECTED because obviously we just are not good enough the way we are. And a woman who goes against the societal norm must be:
A Femi-Nazi
A Lesbian
Someone who's given up who hates men, hates herself, is depressed and just plain pathetic.
While men, shower, shave, brush their teeth, comb their hair and are done! Poof!
This video is a humorous, yet truthful example of the difference:
THANK YOU LADIES!!!!!!!! Loved the video and the comments from this morning. I have been married for 27 years, after my husband came home from Desert Shield/Desert Storm we were having a discussion at the dinner table; he looked me in the eye and said "...your female views are fine but leave them at the front door..."! Needless to say he needed re-education camp, and it was provided promptly.
Hmmmm..I spend only one hour a month having my hair done, root touch up, trim plus a face mask once a week takes 10 min, whiten teeth once a month 30 min, I do these all from my home and I do other things while it's doing it's thing...I workout 5 days a week for an hour running, followed up with light weights workout, I enjoy it , it's me time to just zone out , shut the world off. I do this all from my home so no gym or money being spent .....I also work in the garden/greenhouse daily for a few hours along with a few farm animals, because we eat all organics , followed by housework etc, etc... I'm oil/watercolor painter on the side, we travel, were retired and have grown children so we always doing thing with them or friends, boating, biking, hiking, camping , dinners, gatherings etc, etc ...
So my beauty/ health routine is simple and doesn't take much time out my life or pocket book ..I do these things for me because I enjoy doing them, I feel better, I live better.... Do what you like and makes you feel good..Really there doesn't have be some hidden agenda behind what a woman does or doesn't do.. ...Anyways I'm getting ready to take off for the next 10 days, my first trip solo ever, yeah excited and ready to do this.. So everyone have a great 4th....
You "enjoy" having your teeth whitened and roots touched up (and also enjoy paying out the wazoo for these services) or "enjoy" feeling socially acceptable as a result of having done it?

But you either get this or you don't...
Thanks for the invigorating discussion!
Root touch up runs me $ 10.00, I use organic line, my daughter a lic beautician she does this in the privacy of her own home and during her free time, so no there no socially head game going on, it's mother and daughter time, since she live in the city we live 2 hours out, we do lunch afterwards and catch up.....
Teeth Whiter Crest White Strips from Costco $34.99, since I do my teeth once a month for upkep between my yearly dental checkup and a professional cleaning it only requires me to use just one Crest White Strip..So a box of 28 strips for $34.99 last me and my hubby 2 years, so that's cheap!
Face Mask.. $3.99 Queen Helene Masque Mint Julep..Last six months.
My workout..Free
I think what your not getting is how the media pits women up against each other for our difference , you don't see men behaving in this manner towards each other, why is that? Men don't buy into this trap...
True freedom comes from loving yourself and realizing we are all diffrent, no one way is right for everyone...I had gray hair and I loved it but I wanted a change for me, not because of society pressures or some former youth, I know I'm not younger, nor do I want be younger but I do want be the best of who I'm am at this stage and walk in my life. So I switch out and I love it but I did it for me! Nor have I said anyone lazy etc, etc for not doing these things...
When all said and done, it's not much money going out and requires little to no effort on my part, if anything I can do these things still not miss my favorite activity's .
So we shouldn't buy into it, either, and then there wouldn't be a market for this stuff. But we do, so there is. And most are too inculcated to even see it.
As a single working mum I could justify neither the time nor the expense to get my roots done every 3 weeks by a professional, so I learnt to do it myself.
I get the proper colour and peroxide, mix it up myself.
I only do the roots, about an inch.
It takes me about 10 minutes where it would take the hairdresser a half hour. I am also a lot tidier, I have had professionals leave colour all over my ears and face before.
I wash it out, straighten it, and I have a gorgeous shiny chestnut crowning glory, just like I always had.
Ladies, DIY!!!! ITS SO MUCH EASIER and far cheaper, Ive calculated it costs me less than $3 when I do it myself.
