It's a Christmas present for a relative. Not looking to get anything too pricey. Definitely below $100. Also, she's 5'6" and about 180 lbs, if any one can guess what size that would be (I'd rather not ask because she doesn't like to talk about her weight).
Also Ll bean. Maybe you could peek at the tag of one of the sweaters she is currently wearing to find out the size. Buying clothes for someone who is self conscious about their weight is difficult - sizing and something they like - that they feel is flattering.

If she does not like to talk about sizing, do not buy her clothes.
Seriously.
5'6" women will be in different sizes, depending on HOW they carrying those 180 pounds.
She will, more than likely, have the hassle of returning what you buy, unless you know her size for certain.
If you want us to pick a size we need way more info, like her measurements. Waist and bust at minimum. And some info on her body type.
You can get a button down cardigan basically anywhere that carries basics. What is her style? What types of colors does she like? What type of fit does she like? What would she wear it with? Pants, jeans, skirts, dresses, leggings? All require a different type of cardi.
I have cardigans from gap, target, uniqlo, old navy, banana republic, Ann Taylor, h&m. The list goes on. All serve a different purpose.
Old Navy has a good selection. If you search for cardigan rather than button down sweater, it will make it easier to find what you're looking for on different websites.
I'd guess that someone who was 5'6" and 180lbs would wear an extra large, but it really could vary depending on how busty she is, if she has a lot of muscle, etc.

I'd assume size large at most places. Maybe XL at J.Crew.

Bra size would help us narrow it down.
My mom is 5'6" and 165 and wears an XL, that's why I was guessing XL.
