I am 6'2" tall, and have an average build, and length of legs. A majority of men my height get their height from long legs. My proportions are the same as average height men, and I get mine from a longer than normal body. When I was 20 people thought I was 10 years older than I was. I started going to bars in my late teens and was never carded, and watched as they kicked out others that were 20 years old as they served me. One reason I looked older, was I started to get a higher forehead as I lost hair in front starting at 16, which made me look older.
Today I am 84 years old, and people finding this out think I am late 60s.
A lot of people have a different look, and show their age differently than reality. When I had hair 15 years ago, I had a white fringe as my total hair and looked a lot older than I was. One day I shaved it off and went bald, and people started to think I was 10 years or more younger than I was. Today I am still bald. Recently I went to my doctors office, and the nurse was filling out a few questions on my record, and asked my age. She is 55 herself, and she looked funny when I told her and she had me give my birthday to verify my age. She said you sure don't look that old. I had known that nurse for about 7 years. She thought there was an age error on my chart, and was looking to correct it.
How a person appears to other people as far as their age goes, depends on how hey appear to the other party. A big reason a lot of older women, dye their hair and get rid of the white haired look. How you stand, and how you walk, also give an indication of your age as you grow older.
I assume they think I look my age. That's fine. I'm still hoping I age very well like my mother. Black don't crack.
So true!!! So you probably look much younger. I've carded black people 40+ when I bartended! Never carded a white person who was beyond early 30s. And even that was VERY infrequent.
I'm 53 and the mother of five and grandmother of eight. People don't seem to be surprised one way or the other if the oddball occasion comes up and we're discussing age.
I have good skin and I'm healthy, and I love dressing in cute clothes, but I'm not fixated on appearing younger than I am. What is important to me is that I feel good and am well groomed and attractively dressed.
So no - I don't think I look "old" because I look my age, and I don't consider 53 to be old.
People used to say I looked young a few years ago now when I tell people I'm 41 nobody says "I'd never think that" like they do to my friends. They don't seem surprised at all. Does that mean I look my age?
My sister and I used to joke and say we should add ten years to our age when asked, so we could hear: "oh, you look great for your age".
So the next time someone asks your age just tell them you're 51 years old and maybe you will get the response you are looking for ... or not. That could backfire, I suppose.

Either that or it means that you aren't talking to the same B.S. artists who told your friends that they would never have guessed.
