For men, generally the watch, cuff links and belt-buckle should match since they are more of a "fashion" choice. Wedding rings or class rings which are "personal" items can differ.

The whole mixing metals or mixing colors or layering of clothes with many extraneous pieces/accessories is a clever ploy...it means you probably need to buy more pieces of jewelry or clothing to carry it off...therefore you're spending more money. I mean you MIGHT already have all you need to make the "look" but more often than not you need just one more thing to bring it all together!

In terms of actually mixing metals and colors I tend to go with all cool or all warm...just don't cross that line.

I like a mixture. It would be very difficult to wear one tone as most purses and shoes have a metal accent that could throw the all one tone look right out the window.

That extender looks like a good idea. I have always had tangles when I wear multi length necklaces together.

When I wear white gold or sterling, by necessity I am mixing metals because my rings are all gold. I have not invested enough thought and money in trendy jewelry to have experience with stacking or layering.

I have a few nice pieces and I wear them as intelligently as I can. Just recently I have decided that for me it is OK to wear a silver toned pin with my gold hand jewelry and gold earrings.

What occasionally makes me irritated is the prevalence of silver toned belt buckles. I simply have to decide not to notice them if I am wearing all gold jewelry.
