I remember seeing thong underwear on middle-aged women in the gym locker room in the 80's. It was not a pretty sight. Thongs are not attractive on everyone. Even on some young women.
The thong actually came out of the G-string, which dates all the way back to the 1920's. Historians believe that Indian women wore them way before that period, though.
In New England we called flip flops thongs in the 60s. I might possibly have worn thong underwear in the 80s, if they existed, so I don't think they did.
And so in the south and southwest. I read references to them in California. So calling flip flops "thongs" back in the 60s appears to have been nationwide.
