Were Thongs popular in the 80s/90s? (guys, mens, male)

Saw them on the beach in Italy in the 80s..as bikinis.. horrible things..

We wore thongs on the beach in Europe, the Caribbean, and South Florida in the 1990s.

The 1980s were still a little too early.

The footwear was very popular, the underwear was not.

I remember seeing thong underwear on middle-aged women in the gym locker room in the 80's. It was not a pretty sight. Thongs are not attractive on everyone. Even on some young women.

In 1989, most of the women in Brazil were wearing thong bikinis at the beach. In Venezuela, too, lots of women were at the beach in thongs.

I hear now it's "dental floss" bikinis in Brazil--the new hot thing. As far as I can tell, it's just a clever marketing term from string bikinis.

The thong actually came out of the G-string, which dates all the way back to the 1920's. Historians believe that Indian women wore them way before that period, though.

I don't recall them being a "thing" until the 90s.

And so in the south and southwest. I read references to them in California. So calling flip flops "thongs" back in the 60s appears to have been nationwide.
