I don't see anything wrong with it, I would say it myself if called up to do so, but it isn't mandatory that every citizen do so. I believe that the Flag Code prescribes proper ways to display flags. When you take it down off the flagpole, you are supposed to fold it just so. When it is displayed in a meeting room or church it is supposed to be displayed just so. Most of us don't do these things. But we still love our country, and the flag which represents it.

So, I think you should wear what you will. I wouldn't drag the flag in the mud, or allow it to become tattered. But I honestly don't see any problem wearing on your clothing or as clothing.
The flag code IS federal law, so violating it would be considered illegal. However, I don't believe any criminal penalties are ever employed, even though they can be.

I stand corrected.

I have slight experience with handling the flag, though. I've taken it off and on the flagpole. Neither I, nor most of our custodians ever folded it like you are supposed to.

I do remember that it was ruled legal to put an embroidered flag on one's jeans. I think this was back in the early seventies. Also it is not illegal to burn a flag, I believe. In fact in certain circumstances you are supposed to burn it, if memory serves.

I have been appalled when I have seen flags flying rain or shine, fair weather or foul, until I read somewhere that certain weatherized flags could be flown at all times. I do hate to see a ragged flag flying though.

I can't imagine that wearing a flag could be disrespectful, in and of itself.
