A couple years ago,I got prescription sunglasses for the first time. Recently, they broke and I've just been using regular sunglasses until I can replace them. I have found that I can see just as well with the regular sunglasses as the prescription. Does this mean prescription sunglasses are a total waste of money? Anyone else experienced this?

In your case, it might mean that. For me, no. I have prescription sunglasses, and driving, I cannot read the small text on the infotainment system if I use plain sunglasses. I can see fine to drive as far as the road and road signs, however. It just depends on the problem being corrected by your lenses. I have progressives, slight distance correction at the top, somewhat more correction in the middle for mainly computer screen, and strongest at the bottom for reading.

When was the last time you had your eyes checked?

No, it just means your eyes aren't that bad. My eyes are, and I'm nearsighted, so if my prescription sunglasses broke I couldn't see well at all.

I stopped buying them. I buy "e-clips" which are made to fit the glasses you wear. Love those...have to have made by an eye doctor...

My husband used to keep a pair of prescription sunglasses and a pair of regular glasses and swap them out when he went outside. The last time that he got eyeglasses, he bought the kind that tint automatically when you go outdoors. They're great for him because he goes in and out of buildings all day long and doesn't have to mess with carrying the other pair and switching them out. When he first got them, they took a while to transition back to clear glass, but after he'd used them a few days, they seemed to change more quickly.

I don't know about your case. Are you farsighted or nearsighted? If you use your sunglasses for driving, and you are farsighted, then I think you can get away with cheap sunglasses, if you can pass the driving test.

I am near sighted and I need prescription sunglasses.

i'm practically blind if i try to drive with just regular sunglasses. i'm near sighted, so trying to see out dark glasses without prescription is dual hazard. so good on you for not needing prescription sunglasses! the good ones are expensive!
