I think they're hideous and stopped wearing them anywhere years ago. But evidently they've become an acrimonious issue in some households, and according to these two articles, some folks have very strong views about them:
I never wear shorts of any kind, so I really don't care.
Those who want to wear them are free to do so, as long as they don't expect ME to wear them.
"Fashion", or clothing that is "IN" means nothing to me. All that matters is that I am comfortable. I do not find shorts to be comfortable. therefore, I do not wear them.
You wanna wear them, go right ahead, I don't care. You can even wear them with over-the-calf white socks and sandals, I still won't care!
I wear them a lot. I'm not in to fashion at all so I just wear what's comfortable, and cargo shorts happen to be very comfortable IMO. Nothing beats cargo shorts and a hoodie on a cool day.
I think cargo shorts are better than denim shorts on men. It was really difficult to get my husband to quit wearing denim shorts, and the only way I was able to do that was to get rid of all of his except the smallest ones so he decided that denim shorts were all tight and uncomfortable. Then he switched to cargo shorts, so I bought a few pairs of thick, heavy, stiff ones that were a size too big in the waist (so he had to wear a belt, making them less comfortable) and some nice, regular khaki shorts in lightweight fabrics. Now all he wears are the regular khaki shorts and he thinks it was all his idea
I think they're a wonderful option for men with wide pelvises, because they have enough 'flou' to eliminate that ugly flared-hip look, by making the whole leg look wide (not just the protruding pelvic bone). Wide-pelvised men look as ugly and bulbous in Bermuda Shorts, as they do in flat-front "slacks".
'Flou' is the ability of clothing to stand apart from the body. Stacked, cowboy-pressed jeans have 'flou', for example.
I would personally assume far more acrimony around jorts than cargo shorts.
