I don't call anyone fat ever. But if I say anything I will tell them to do whatever makes them feel better. Usually someone who makes that comment has something else going on that isn't letting them feel like "their best self."
If they constantly dwell on not being able to do stuff because they are "fat." I might give them a gentle reminder about now waiting until things are perfect before doing the stuff you want to do, because it may never be perfect.
I usually say me too. If you want to lose weight, Weight watchers and the point counting works. Also dating does if you are happy dating.Doing sports or active outings such as walking, boating, canoeing, hiking, swimming, physical job...etc.
I always say something like "as long as you're healthy, who cares about weight" (of course, a healthy person will be a healthy weight, which is not to say skinny)
I have a friend that does this when he's not fat at all, and I say to him "You know that's pretty insulting to actual fat people, cuz if you think you're fat, what are they?"
Whenever people tell me that they are fatter than they'd like to be, if they are actually fat, I don't say anything, but give them a copy of my own personal weight-control diet. If they aren't fat, I give them a copy of it anyway, because it's good for health and strength, as well as losing weight.
Is it any different than a smoker saying "I should probably quit smoking".
Would you respond with "No. You're fine just the way you are."
Say nothing. The speaker already knows what he should or shouldn't do. He doesn't need your approval or disapproval. It's rude of him to pull you into his nasty self-indulgent habits. It could even be "job-wise dangerous" for you to be truthful about his girth. Don't take the bait.
And if he presses you for a response, he's setting you up for something. Beware! Your job could be at risk, so remain mute and don't incriminate yourself with an answer either way.
