Why are pants pockets made of a different, thinner material than the rest of the pants?
For example, I love my ripstop fabric pants. Why do they use the thinner material for the pockets instead of the material used for the rest of the pant? I'd love for my front pockets to be as durable as the rest of the pant.
they do this with denim also. The pockets aren't made from the thinner denim for more durability.
What PittChick said and also because of cheaper manufacturing costs. Because of how the fabric grain runs for pockets, it takes more material than you may be aware of to cut pieces. For a home sewer, not a big expense. For someone making thousands or tens of thousands of pairs of pants (Levi, Lees, etc.), it adds up to substantial savings.
You need pockets to lay flat inside the garment, no? A thicker material might be bulky. In cheaper garments, you should expect cheaper fabrics in general. Most inside pockets are not made of the same fabric as the garment. The pocket should be made from smoother, tighter weave fabric that will lay flat. It should be close to the same color as the garment. More expensive garments should have nicer, deeper pockets.

Because it's cheaper, and also--to eliminate any bulking in that area.
I just bought a brand new pair of pants but I really didn't check out the pockets, just noticed that they were there. I brought the pants home and started to rip the stitches off the pockets so I could check out the pockets. What a joke! The pockets are about 2.5 inches - what is the use for pockets that small? I could put some keys or money there and it would fall out if I was running to catch the bus. Completely useless pockets - would it have cost them too much to make the pockets deeper and usable? Take away their profits much?
I've got a pair of jeans that my keys, ink pens, old switchblades have put holes in the pockets, I cut the sleeves from a tshirt, and sewing that over it. Pretty sure that'll hold up far better.
