Well, my sister-in-law is getting married. The wedding is a last-minute backyard wedding in the groom-to-be's backyard, so I only have about a week to figure out and buy something to wear. I asked her how dressy or casual it's going to be, and she said it's going to be "backyard chic," whatever that means. The temperatures are slated to be 39 (low) to 56 (high) that day, but the wedding is at noon, so I'm guessing it will be toward the higher end of that. What to wear?

Well, I wouldn't wear tall high heels, for a start, unless the back yard is totally concreted.

The adjective, chic, must mean something several cuts above denim, I think. So, a short dressy dress and a Pashmina shawl? Bare legs unless it is quite cool. If cool, I'd wear pantyhose and a knock out jacket.

I'd choose comfort though in this case, over high fashion.

I tried Googling backyard chic wedding attire, but the pics I got didn't look that special. You could try it yourself, to see if you come up with anything helpful.

I feel like something called "backyard chic" would encompass tights and boots/booties. I don't know where the wedding is, but I'd feel weird going bare-legged outside in November.

A dress with a sparkly cardigan? I think you could do dark denim with a fancy top and booties.

Same came to my mind - nice slim pant/leggings, boots, a nice top w/a shawl, poncho, scarf....

39 degrees--woo! I would wear a long sweater dress with a very cool necklace, tights and tall boots.

Because I am always cold, I would have a hat, gloves, scarf and full-length coat too.

I'd wear a sleeveless sheath dress in black and a red leather blazer, tights and booties. I own these clothes so this would be easy. I might add a colorful scarf.

If it will be anywhere near 39 degrees I would need tights.

Sweater dress, patterned tights, sparkly scarf, nice coat. And how about some booties or ankle boots?

I happen to have a sweater dress that has gold thread towards the bottom, some motorcycle inspired black boots with gold detail, lace look tights, an interesting wool sweater and a graphic black and white scarf. That is what I would put together from my closet.

I last went to an outdoor wedding and my heels kept sinking. I picture a casual chic dress, maybe a denim shirtwaist, or even plaid, with tights and boots, under a nice jacket or cashmere wrap. You won't have fun if you are cold.
