No big deal. Melania can shop Ivanka's clothing line. I'm sure the quality is even better, since they are made... where?

I don't think Sophie whatshername has anything to worry about. Melania wouldn't wear any of her creations anyway. Being a former model, she is going to create a buzz with whatever she wears, and she has excellent taste.

i have been working in the apparel/footwear industry since 2003. The majority of the clothes/sneakers are made in China, India, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Cambodia, Turkey, Portugal, Indonesia, etc.

Even the high end luxury brands (a la burberry, marc jacobs,Miuccia Prada, Mulberry, etc) have moved some of their production to China but still charge the absurd retail prices.

Also, in Europe the ‘Made in’ criteria are easy to meet. For instance, the majority of the manufacturing is kept offshore and then the finishing touches, quality control and packaging is done in the sexy Made in Country. (France, Italy, England)

Chinese manufacturing has advanced due to the bulk of the apparel industry being manufactured in China. The USA and 1st world countries have a lot of catch up on.

This designer, Sophie, is very foolish.
Unless you're some world famous designer, I think it's a safe bet that she knows better than you.

I'm glad politics has nothing to do with the strong opinions in this thread

I am very interested in Melania's choices, she is always so polished.
We have not had a young, polished, sophisticated first lady like this since Jackie Kennedy.
Nancy Regan was always polished but a bit older than Jackie or Melania.

That black and red 'black widow spider' dress she designed for Obama's coronation looked like hell (as well as some of her other 'creations'). I'd run from that designer as fast as possible if I were Melania.

Me thinks this Sophie Theallet has become a legend in her own mind.

I think Melania is going to be viewed in a similar way that Princess Diana was, fashion-sense wise. Although everyone's taste in style is different, everything seems to look good on a tall, well proportioned person.

I like Michelle Obama's style. I think she is very down to earth and despite what I have heard people say about her I think she is very pretty. There is no need to compare Melania to anyone else. She is her own person and knows how to dress appropriately.

Mod cut: Orphaned (quoted post has been deleted).

This is a PR move, pure and simple. If the court of public opinion changes on the trump camp in a few months or later in the cycle, they'll probably try.

But Melania likes shopping on her own so it is probably a mute point.

The underlying issue is that the fashion industry tends to be LGBT- and women-friendly, and some designers may choose to take a stand against what they feel Melania's husband's policies and opinions are by not directly offering her clothes, which is completely in their rights. We may see different designers come to the forefront, or Melania may make other fashion choices.
