Same reason woman's shoes have heels and men's don't. Men are more interested in function than fashion and vice versa.
And that sucks, there are women out there who want function.
I don't care how great it is, if I have to adjust it or tug at it all day and it makes me uncomfortable, then it's not for me!
LL Bean isn't the only manufacturer with this issue. Almost every manufacturer short changes us women by not offering pockets, or substandard ones.
L.L. Bean is not a manufacturer. They contract manufacturers to make clothes and other products for them. Sometimes a company like L.L. Bean will submit designs to be made to specification, but other times they will purchase product s made by manufacturers that they think will fit their company's image and satisfy its customer base. Then they have their label put on the product.
Bean may have selected a bid by a manufacturer to produce flannel lined jeans for less than the previous manufacturer and settled for the shorter pockets.
I've been complaining about this for years with women's clothing. And it's funny how many guys don't realize that women endure this... the looks on their faces are priceless when I tell them or show them I have no pockets.
^^Exactly! I bet they are the same men who then complain when women have to rummage around in their bags when they need an item.
My biggest peeve is when they put in fake pockets (i.e. it has what looks like the top opening but it doesn't actually open up to anything) - listen, manufacturers, if it's not going to actually be a pocket, don't bother adding the extra bulk to that area of the jeans/pants.
^^I've seen those pants that look like they have pockets but on closer inspection, it's a fake one. It's very annoying to come across this.

I can't keep my phone in most of my jeans pockets because it won't fit, so I end up missing calls when I go upstairs or outside, away from my phone. And I have the fairly small iPhone5.
I literally have some pockets that are one inch deep. Gee, thanks for the 1 inch.
When I used to have a flip phone, I would always keep it in my front pocket as it was easy to get to it when outside.

I order men's coats for winter work because they DO have great pockets, including a good inside breast pocket......
I could not care less about adding bulk.... I need my stuff!!
I don't care about adding bulk either. ^^^^

^^I agree. Shallow pockets are worthless.
Even when I do carry a purse, I will still keep my wallet and keys in my pockets, for 2 reasons; 1) If I'm in a store and want to buy something, it's very easy to reach into a pocket to get my wallet; 2) I always figure that if my purse got stolen, I would at least have my wallet and keys on me.
For years I've been wearing LL Bean jeans. I like that they come in petite lengths, have flannel lined ones for winter and have always liked that they have deep pockets.
So...this past Saturday, I was in their store nearest to where I live. I was considering buying another pair of flannel jeans. As is my habit, I checked the front pockets---and they had changed. Now they are the worthless very shallow ones. I checked the pockets on some of their other style jeans---same problem.
A sales clerk saw me checking the pockets and I mentioned how they had changed---and not for the better. She told me that I wasn't the first one to notice. In fact, she had heard complaints from several women. She had no idea as to why LL Bean did this but did say that she was going to pass along feedback to management.
I sent an email to customer service and got an answer very quickly---not that it was much help. Basically, they said they would pass along my comments to the appropriate department.
Well...I like having deep pockets in jeans. I did tell customer service that if this didn't change, I wouldn't be buying their jeans anymore.
To those who do wear LL Bean jeans, what are your thoughts on this change? Will you continue to buy their jeans or look for a different brand? If it is the latter, any good brand recommendations?
I read similar complaints a couple of years ago about one of their popular style of work jackets (adirondack jacket?). It's a work jacket, yet a couple of the main pockets in the new version had very shallow, useless pockets. On a work jacket? It's the style of pocket that is on a slant, and some customers complained that things would actually fall out of the pockets. This was their online shopping site.
It must be a cost cutting measure.
I wear Levi's jeans. I've noticed that some of my Levi's have deep pockets, but some have shallower pockets. They're fine, but not as deep as the others. I assumed it was the style of that particular Levi's number (501, 536, etc.), but now I wonder if I bought the shallow pocket jeans later than the deep pocket ones.

Good points re: the jacket.
When I wrote to LL Bean customer service, I pointed out that much of their clothing is geared towards outdoor activities. People who either work outside or do outdoor activities want clothing with good pockets. Women don't want to be carrying a purse while they are out for a walk or a run.
I will look into Levi Jeans if LL Bean doesn't correct the pocket issue.
LL Bean and Lands End can last for many years. Unfortunately, sometimes the items get cheap and flimsy and that's when they get sent back. LL Beans flannel shirts and night gowns are super comfy and well made, at least for now.
Deep pockets are a must for everything. Try Lee jeans or Lands End
As someone said, contact L.L.Bean or leave a review. They do change, they do listen.
I have an L.L.Bean Outlet store not too far away. Every time I go there the styles seem to have changed. When we mention it to them, they are very nice about it and they tell us that it's because of the quality control with clothing being made in China.
My husband has had boots fall apart but Bean's will take them back and let him pick out another pair--and they will tell him that, yes, they have had complaints about this particular boot and there is a team of employees in China right now trying to remedy the problem.
Some of their clothing is real junk now. You might as well go to Walmart. Some of their shoes in particular. Yet some of their shoes are still nice. Same with the pants and shirts. Also that they will discontinue a style like the wonderful fleece lined flannel shirts that are only for MEN this year! I've had a problem with their pants the last few years though. Seems that there's a gap in the thigh area and I don't like that because it's loose and might make me look fat.
Thing is, they have to cut corners to offer free shipping and great customer service. They will take anything back. They can't do all this for free without cutting corners somewhere.
(I like Lee jeans too and they may be the answer to the L.L.Bean pants that gap around the thigh on me.)
Why is it that so much of women's clothing has NO pockets, when almost all male clothing does? Is it because the designers assume a woman is always carrying a purse? I WANT POCKETS ON ALL OF MY CLOTHING, and I want those pockets to actually work!
YES!! I've been looking for a pair of dress pants - just black pants, with pockets, regular straight legs, zipper in front. No luck so far. I buy most of my clothes from Talbot's, and they have eliminated pockets on most of their dress pants.
And they also have those shallow jeans pockets.
U assume it's to save money on the amount of fabric used in those pockeets.
We have an LL Bean outlet nearby. I gravitate towards men's sizes because I'm not curvy. I'm more straight-up-and-down with a high waistline.
