I've definitely taken the garbage in/out, gone out to get the mail/paper, and walked the dog up the sidewalk at 7 AM or 10 PM while in pajamas. I have never, and would never, go out to the coffee shop or go shopping in my pajamas. But my pajamas are all obviously pajamas...not merely sweatpants or t-shirts I happen to wear to sleep. Also, I am not a high schooler or college kid, who I am inclined to give a pass on doing this kind of stuff, because kids do wacky things, and hubris of youth and all that.
I see people in pajamas at Walmart a lot, even in broad daylight. Not sweats and a t-shirt. PAJAMAS. Flannel pants with drawstring/button fly, and some big cartoony print.
This has been a thing since at least the late 80s/early 90s. I think it started with Skidz, Zubaz, and parachute pants being a trend.
Those were not that different looking then Joe Boxer pajama pants. And then at some point people just said, 'What's the difference?' and it became acceptable to wear pajamas to the store.
My pajamas are basically just gym shorts and a tank or t-shirt. I've been out on quick errands or dropping the kids off before. However, one lesson I learned, is that if I'm going to be stepping out of the car, make sure I have underwear under the shorts. Gym/bball shorts + commando in public = no bueno.
Not out of the yard. We did have a mentally ill neighbor (or drug burnout) that used to go out and walk around the neighborhood in her pajamas while swatting at imaginary ?, well, whatever they were, they kept her busy swatting. I didn't think she would be a good example to follow.
No. I saw a man in the grocery store a few weeks ago wearing a T shirt and rumpled pajama bottoms though. He was buying beer and junk food and looked like a slob. It's a style for some twenty somethings though, I have heard.
Wearing PJ bottoms has been trendy with students for at least 10 years, my daughter wanted to do it in HS and I thought it was crazy. By the time she was in college it was really popular in our area. I guess it's been trickling down to the point that now it's not just the bottoms and all ages are doing it. Was kinda fun and interesting to see a college campus full of youngsters in their Hello Kitty and Sponge Bob pants, not so much to see granny at the store in her robe and slippers.
In college, students were in pj fashion all the time. I could never do it. However, I did get pretty drunk with roommates one time when in my early twenties and walked around downtown past midnight in pjs, wrapped in blanket. There was no one around (small town). It was a strange feeling of being exposed.
I don't understand feeling that comfortable in public, personally, to walk around in pjs as normal attire.
