jerseygal4u;47225245Why are large hips seen as a bad thing?
I think they are ONLY considered "bad" is if they are just TOO large. As in if its easier to go OVER her than it is to go AROUND her then those large hips are TOO large. The standard hourglass shape is totally fine and preferable.
When you start getting into the 40" range of hips then, yeah, things are looking a bit not good. Not good at all. ESPECIALLY if shorter than 5' 10" tall.
I would be interested in knowing whether you are male or female, only because of your Marilyn Monroe and "skinny women" comment.
My husband and I just watched "Some Like It Hot" again the other night after not watching it for years, and we both thought that Monroe was actually PLUMP in that role.
However, in the commentary, in talking about MM's figure, Tony Curtis said he never understood why women were so concerned about being thin, that he liked [vernacular for breasts] and "voluptuous women"! And from what I gather, many men agree with him!
The point is that beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder, and as long as you are are healthy, who cares what your measurements are!
I think that picture has been slightly photo-shopped to add a few curves, but it's been a while since I saw that movie. However, Marilyn looks heavier than she actually was here. But she was no Twiggy.
Marilyn was considered quite voluptuous and the epitome of sexy back in her day. She was a very bright and gifted comedienne who took acting seriously and was often underestimated. She struggled with the stereotypes of the day and had a lot of sadness in her life. But she was gorgeous, and left us far too soon.

I know some cultures they are considered a feminine, but it seems like there are a large amount of American women that want small hips.
Why?
Every week or so i will get a comment from a woman that it must be hard to find pants or that dresses wont look right on me( when that is not the case).
I also heard some people say they look matronly.
That has been bothering me lately.
I also used to get comments when i was skinny that i was still fat even though i was normal BMI for my height.
OP, isn't it amazing how random comments from small minded people can manage to get under our skin? Rationally, we know isn't a darn thing wrong with us. Rather, things are pretty right with us! Those thoughts though can be as annoying and useless as a piece of gum stuck to your shoe.
I read an article once that many/most designers prefer to design for thin, hipless women. They don't have to "bother" with making the clothing be flattering to a woman with an actual womanly shape. I think decades of media has born that out and years of seeing it in ads, on TV etc. has convinced a lot of people that it's the standard of beauty.
There are more and more designers that are designing for actual women - and doing it beautifully! I'm not a "label" person but if I ever wanted to buy something by a known designer, Christian Siriano would be my first stop!

Why does it bother you is the real question?
Hips aren't seen as a "bad thing", people have different tastes in women and what they consider attractive.
As a 5'8 155 lb guy I don't want a woman bigger than me in any regard, personally, I've been with larger women but it's not my preference.
A person with a small mind makes needless ad hominem attacks when someone shares an opinion they disagree with.
