What I've been reading is that it is possible, but only up to about 1/2 inch. Anyone know first hand?

You would also need to have the sole reshaped at the shank (under your arch). It's not as simple as cutting off part of the heel. And whether or not that can be done depends on the construction of the shoe.

Best to take the shoes to a repair shop and ask if they're able to do it.

Yes, I certainly have. But nowhere near half an inch. I go to a very good shoe repair guy who always says that you can't shorten heels much more than a quarter-inch, tops, preferable less. Otherwise it throws everything off. But my guy just shortens the heel itself. I'm guessing that to do the re-shaping that Hertfordshire describes would be prohibitively expensive.

My sister has done it many times, but like was already said, a cobbler can't take a shoe from 4 inches down to 2, they can usually only do 1/4" to 1/2". Is it even worth it?
