Heck yeah. I'm in my 40s and people are still mean.

Back in elementary & jr high, I was Ogre. By high school it was baboon and beast. And obviously they made it a point to let me know that I was ugly.

Yes I have and it's pretty much true. But it taught me humility and forced me to develop my mind. You have to work with what you have.

I went through a period of 'hotness' in my 50's and totally superficially enjoyed it. I didn't actually get any cuter but I didn't look all used up yet. And I didn't dress or look like your grandma! Now I look good for my age and it's kind of fun to see the other side.

Yes...too many times unfortunately

Happened to me once at a church, and that was the only one that hurt.

If anybody has been waiting for it, yes, it happened to me. Sort of. Not directly called "ugly," which I think I'd remember, but by boys I was occasionally compared to some characters widely known as unattractive. It stung, but maybe I could've used it more regularly or in harsher terms, to make me do what I needed to do. In hindsight, I was unattractive (goofy-looking is as specific as I'll be), and that doesn't stop being a problem after schooling ends.

As for why some people might be called ugly (or an equivalent) when they're not, I've thought of two main reasons, one simple and one complicated:
The simple one is high beauty standards, like at a stereotypical prep school.
The more complicated one is looking different, like being darker than most peers (e.g., racism or colorism) or having red hair.
I would guess that, in the second scenario, most of those people eventually realize that that doesn't mean they truly are or were ugly.

I don't know if a bad hairstyle alone is enough to get someone called "ugly."

Yes I was. Directly (the word "ugly") and indirectly when people picked out specific things to ridicule about my appearance. Mostly in Jr High and HS, though a few times since.

It's almost too precious that people think this doesn't happen. Or that it doesn't really matter. You were there. And it mattered.
