"Ugly" has come up in a few different recent threads. However, I haven't ever seen a group of people discuss whether offline (by, for example, a classmate) they have ever been called "ugly" (or otherwise described as such). I'm sure it's most common among adolescents, but for example I wonder if it's sometimes used against people who aren't actually ugly. Ready, set, go. It will be fun - not.

I have. When I was in middle school I was kind of awkward (bad perm, not the best fashion sense) and there were a couple of guys that would call me ugly. One guy said that I had a face like a Mad Ball. This was a toy from the 80s, a ball with grotesque faces and the jingle went "Gross for one, gross for all." I came to realize that these guys were pretty much jerks to everyone who was not in the popular group. I compensated by developing a sense of humor and personality. Then I grew into my looks and got away from these idiots. For some time I was insecure about certain attributes of my appearance, but now I accept myself the way I am. No one has ever said something that stupid to me since.

The guys who called me "ugly" back in junior high school are now aging and no longer attractive at all. Of course, you can't tell from their photoshopped pictures social media page but when I went to the reunion, I found out what they really look like now. And their wives, too. None of them married raving beauties. You can tell they had to settle.

Oh yes. Back in junior high there was a trio of mean girls who routinely called me "dog face". Since I was born with a cleft lip, even though it was surgically repaired before I was one year old, being called "dog face" trashed my self-esteem for years.

Sure...as a teenager I had bad acne and for several years was called stuff like "pizza face"....does that qualify?...because it sure made me feel ugly. Is it better or worse that I actually HAD acne versus people just being mean even if I'd had average looks?
