Ok someone stop me.....lol. and I don't like the jacket it looks kind of dated due to the material. You are in Italy in summer. Skip the jacket and dress shoes for pants/vest might work better with your rugged look, and double duty shoes.
Some times it's hard to find solution if you set your mind to something but I say start from scratch maybe it will be less complicated.
Then again all my post might be useless as I don't know your age category.

Doesn't it depend on the style of the wedding?

You know the couple, you know who you are...wear what you will be comfortable in.

Your obvious concern for style & such suggests you won't show up in sweat pants and a t-shirt.

I was married 34 years ago and it was an evening wedding and some of the guests just wore khakis, shirt and jacket. It didn't make or break my day and they looked fine.

Clean, put together -- doesn't have to be a full on suit and tie.

I like the suggestions to substitute fashion statement for formal wear. You got this. Have fun.

First of all Europe is much more formal than the United States if you're from here. So that is a casual not semi formal look. I'd opt for a deep deep Navy and keep it classic. You and your wife should dress it up, shoes included. Carry them on the plane in a dry cleaning bad and have the stewardess hang them for you. Once the wedding is over box them up and ship them home. You'll be dressed properly and won't have to worry about luggin it all to Scotland!

^^^^This is not true.

Unlike the US, in Europe--especially in Italy--people are expected to look well put together. Generally, European men dress very fashionably. Just being clean is not enough, particularly for a wedding.

I think the idea of shipping to Italy and shipping home is your best bet......
