I was told that my shoes look small. Sort of embarrassing!

Is that US or UK size (doesn't sound like European size)

If US, yes, that sounds a little short for a guy. But feet are feet, I wouldn't let it bother me at all. Different styles will make your feet look longer if it bothers you.

Thanks, I was examining my feet earlier and they do seem small. (Sigh)

The average size for an American male is 10.5. There's nothing you can do to increase it, so it's better not to bother worrying about it.

I used to take an eight or eight and a half, and I thought that was small. Now I take a nine and a half consistently. My feet look the same to me, but maybe I should worry about having fat feet now.

Probably the best route is to just keep on truckin'.

Just wait a while. As you get older your feet will get wider and a bit longer.

You can't help the size of your feet. I am a woman, but I wear a narrow size 13 women/11 men. I have the opposite problem where my feet look massive. Most people don't notice or care, so it doesn't bother me, other than to be incredibly frustrated trying to find shoes I need. So don't let it bother you if one lone person took notice.

You're less likely to stub your toe like I do on a very regular basis, so be grateful.

The rumor that you can predict the length of a man's nose by the size of his shoe is a fallacy. Don't worry about it.

Don't be embarrass for what you consider as small size for a guy. That's simply who you are, and that's the nature way of how your body was formed. Is in your gene, so I don't think you should ever be unhappy of what your physical appearance is.
