When I was a kid just coming in to the age where I could make my own choices about what to wear - I was living in a beach community. Sneakers were not the running/athletic shoes of today. And wearing them WITH socks was completely uncool. We used to ridicule the tourists who would come every year, wearing socks and shorts. So uncool. Just completely uncool.
The cool thing was wearing sneakers or loafers with no socks. Of course, you couldn't go to a job interview looking like that! So Gold Toe socks were the thing for when you had to wear socks. And Gant shirts, with the loop in back.
I still, to this day, hesitate to go in public wearing socks with shorts - unless they are shorty socks, or I turn down my crew socks so they aren't mid-calf. But I long ago learned that socks serve a very good purpose. They prevent blisters - or help to prevent them. They collect all that dead skin sluff, so your shoes don't. And they keep your feet warm. Even with open toe shoes I prefer to wear socks for comfort and practicality.
But I am a bit careful about how they look!
