I would never tell a man what shoes he ought to wear. My 15 year old son (who is in the identity crisis/fashion disaster phase of life apparently) found a pair of Adidas flipflops that he likes and he wears long athletic socks with them. With shorts and a hoodie, even if it's 90 degrees out, and a fedora. I try to tell him he looks silly, but hey...parents don't know nothin' about nothin'.
EDIT: Actually I don't judge him TOO harshly, when I think about some of my own clothing choices when I was in 9th grade...
Yeah. He also likes to perch a pair of sunglasses on the brim of the hat, while wearing his prescription eyeglasses on his face. He's like something out of a bad 80's teen pop film or sitcom. Probably starring "the Coreys." *sigh* He'll outgrow it. I hope.

Well, bless his heart, as they say.
Speaking of days of yore, the OP's description of black shoes and socks with shorts has me picturing this: https://goo.gl/TvoPVs
I sometimes wish I could waylay a nice looking young girl in public, pay her to tell him he looks silly and should not wear socks with sandals, and then disappear. Just to try to get the point across.
I teach 7th grade, in the warmer months a lot of the boys wear athletic sandals with either crew or over the calf athletic socks. I don't think a young girl would tell him he looks silly since she's probably used to seeing lots of boys wearing socks with sandals. I don't get the look. I just shake my head in the spring, and then go about my teaching.
And that's why your girlfriends have tried to get you to wear sandals.
I thought it was because they thought I have nice looking feet lol. I have been told I have nice feet (for a guy) but always felt kinda funny showing them off. It is a weird hang up I guess.

I don't care much for boat shoes or loafers, not really my thing. I couldn't wear shoes without socks.
Athletic sandals? Are you talking the Nike or Adidas slip ons? I had a pair years ago but just use them to get the mail or take the dog out or the like and usually wore them with socks lol
In California, it's normal for people to wear sandals. Nobody "makes" anyone wear them. It's a choice. Sunny weather has that effect on people. The proximity of beaches does, too.

It's a jock look. Pro footballers and baseballers shed their cleats in the locker room and slide into sandals while still wearing the socks.

I know men who refuse to wear shorts, so flip flops are not even in my radar. My dh has a chronic nail fungus so doesn't wear sandals either. He rocks the shorts though.
Guys who wear basketball shorts with black socks and slip on sandals are very hot!!
YES! Hairy white legs, black socks and sandals... why is this not more popular??
