I'm still hung up on "widespread" ... I can't remember where you live, but maybe that's the problem. It's certainly not widespread where I am. I can't remember the last time that I saw a man with a piercing.
OP, if you do not mind - where are you located (general area is fine) that you are seeing the majority of guys wearing earrings? Around the northwest US, I see some but certainly not a majority.
For me personally - I like the look so long as it's kept a bit conservative. Small to medium studs and hoops are fine. My dear wife does not care for guys with earrings, and my workplace is very conservative. If not for those two details, I'd go for the look in a heartbeat.
Conversely, I'm not at all a fan of stretching, and generally not of facial piercings other than ears.
In accordance with Forum rules, this rejuvenated thread shall focus ONLY on the prevalence of studs, earings, and other visible body piercings on males around me. It is not a criticism of piercings, just observation.
To sum up, such piercings have gone from being the exception to being the rule, baseD on my Empirical observations out in public, at work, and at social gatherings. In short, it makes me, the non-bearer of such piercings, feel self-conscious here in good ol 2017.
Thoughts?
These days when I see someone without any body modifications, I think that person is kind of a rebel who knows his or her own mind and isn't influenced by the crowd.

Logjam
Connecticut.
And to change the course of this thread slightly - what drives a man's desire to "go for the look"? Earrings, that is? I still think the only place for earrings is on a female.

And to think decades ago men with earrings and other piercings were viewed as the rebel! what the H- happened?

Not everyone thinks the way you do. That's the only thing needed to drive their desire.
Then don't get anything pierced. It's not complicated.
Truth.
I have no issue with people getting piercings because I am going to choose what I do or do not want.
Except that my husband cannot stand the idea of me piercing my nose. Even a tiny, little stud. Nothing. He is fine with my tattoos (and mine are large), but he's not keen on piercings beyond earrings (I have 3 sets of those).
Eh. I humor him. It's not like piercing my nose was some sort of deep desire.
I will admit I don't personally understand extreme gauges. I mean, more from an earlobe damage thing than anything else. Still, those are their ears, so it's not my business.
