I was wondering, does anyone pay attention to the brand of zippers in their clothes such as pants, shorts, jackets, and sweatshirts? I wonder if the brand really matters as an indicator of quality.
Most of what I buy tends to use YKK, Ideal, or Talon. Some of the cheaper stuff from Walmart might use some lesser known brands.
So, do you pay attention to the brand of zippers on your clothes?
Only on outerwear I know will get a lot of abuse. Don't really care what the brand is otherwise as long as it works and is sewn in well. If a zipper fails prematurely on a garment I really like, I just replace it.
I have had this vest for 5 years and really love the chrome tipped zip. It holds up really well, and is still functional after all the wash cycles and rainy nights in summer: https://photos.app.goo.gl/fh379njaak72X7S69
I can’t remember what the zipper brand is, but it does look and feel as good as new.
And specifically on what uses what, my seersucker shorts from my favorite brand from Spring 2013 has Talon, while all their 2016 and newer pants and shorts that I have use YKK. For their 1/4 zip sweatshirts, mine have Ideal zippers.
YKK seems to the most popular or the brand name of the garment.
YKK is the #1 zipper manufacturer worldwide, with Ideal being #2. Cheaper brands of clothes might use some lesser-known zipper brands from China. Often the zipper manufacturer will customize the zipper pull with the clothing brand's name; you can sometimes still see the manufacturer name of the zipper on the back of the zipper. I know Levi's tends to customize their zipper pulls, but they still generally tend to be made either by YKK or Ideal.
The only thing I pay attn to is the worse quality of zippers!! (As most things now)
I had to get my zipper replaced on my JAcket and what they put on thier was garbage basically.... The guide to put it on at the botom is so small and hard to get it started!!!
And people wonder why I dont like new things...... Its mostly crap compared to things I remember which were much nicer!!
YKK zippers are preferred on jackets or outerwear.
Some of the other zipper quality ruin a garment. Adidas is known to ruin a track suit with cheap zippers.
