Please pardon my ignorance, but exactly how do they highlight, especially up to a blonde shade?
I frost my hair. Pull strands through a cap, dump bleach on. Wait. Wash, rinse, dry. Apply toner. Wait. Rinse off, remove cap, wash entire head.
This seems long, but I can let the hair grow in and only do it twice a year, depending on how much of my hair gets cut off. No touchups at all. It adds body to my fine, limp, hair and brightens my face. Because I try to pull just a few strands from many holes, the entire head looks lighter and not clumpy. It also tends to harmonize with the grey, which would not be the case if I dyed it.
My limited knowledge is that either you strip OUT pigment/color with some sort of bleach, natural or artificial; or you add pigment/color TO the hair with a dye/tint of some sort. You can make hair darker with a dye, but not much lighter. So to lighten, you use bleach, and I don't think the bleach is supposed to touch metal, so it cannot be with those glazing solutions that they layer in tinfoil.
I know I am missing something here. Can someone please explain?
