I wish my lady only charged $35! I tip about 20% including the money I give the shampoo lady, and it’s a painful bill for this preferably low-maintenance gal. She charges $95 for cut, style, and hair stain (covers gray at temples and makes my hair really glossy).
In restaurants I tip 20% for good service. However with my hair stylist it's a whole different thing. The service is much more personal, shampooing my hair and all. Also, I want my hair stylist to remember me and the way I like my hair styled so that I don't have to do a whole number each time we start. She knows just how I like it and we can have a friendly chat rather than talk hair. Also, I was with my last stylist at least 25 years, and going to stick with Darlene as long as she keeps cutting my hair. It's like repeat visits and some kind of friendship.
I usually tip 20% but the last stylist worked at one of those cheap places and only charged $18 so I always gave her a $20 tip because she is one of the few people that cut my hair the way I want and I was used to paying over $45 so $38 was still cheap for me.
Unfortunately I just found out she left the business so now I have to start all over again trying to find someone who knows how to do a razor cut.
I've had only 3 hair stylists my entire life, other than a few odd chop shops between. The first lasted about a dozen years, the second over 25 years, been with current one a bit more than a year.
You see your hairdresser regularly throughout the year and build a friendship. You see a restaurant waiter or waitress how often? Rarely for me. No personal relationship.
I'm friends with my hairdresser. I have to tip her more. And as I said above, the service is a whole lot more personal.
That's why I give her 40% tip. Looking good is very important to me. I'm single!
I usually tip $15 for a $35 trim and style/straighten. I've been going to my stylist for a while & on top of always doing a good job & getting back to me every time (unlike some other stylists) she genuinely cares about her clients. If I wanted to tip $20 is that too much?
A good tip is 15%. Prices go up, so percentage should not. With that being said, tips are based on the service given, so this can fluctuate either way.
