I am in my 50's and I think I look much older than my years, not sure why. Any tips would be appreciated. I am more interested in beauty tips rather than fashion tips, although both are helpful.

I am medium build, brunette, growing out a bad, short haircut, I am kind of pale. I don't wear much makeup because my eyes are super sensitve, but I think I need to wear more. I should probably lose maybe 5 pounds.

Maybe you are being too hard on yourself. But why not take your own advice? Lose the few pounds. tone up if you need to. Find the most gentle, natural makeup out there and experiment. Try a new hairstyle - (you can use wigs, extensions, pieces, etc while yours grows out.(sometimes that can make all the difference.

Maybe try a self tanner on your face to add more color if you feel too pale and washed out, an use some color like a lip tint on your lips. A little eye makeup to open the eyes REALLY does a lot to make one look more youthful. Try something more natural like from Burt's Bees or Bare Minerals. Hope this helps!

You could try changing up your hair color.

And start experimenting with make up. I'd start with foundation, blush, an eyeliner pencil, and mascara, and lip gloss.

Just my personal opinion, but if you're not used to make up at all, start with cheaper make up, to fine tune the shade and coverage you like, and then work up from there. You'll be in experimental mode for a bit, so, IMO, it's pointless to spend a whole lot of money just yet.

Use a good moisturizer, that is more important then make-up. Get your face to look healthy, and not cover it up with a lot of goop. Use a light lipstick. You will be beautiful

^^All of this.

OP, you'll find that attention to hair color will probably give you the best results.

What's often missing in women as they age is contrast--between complexion and hair color. Aging skin tends to pale. Blondes often look better with a hair shade that's not so light, and brunettes look better with a shade that's not too dark. Highlights (and lowlights) are a great way to add subtle depth and contrast.

With respect to makeup, Sassybluesy is right. There's a wide variety of makeup at dollar stores, and experimenting with coverage and shades is the way to go.

One suggestion, on a personal note: Don't buy into the idea that older women can't wear color on their eyelids. I have to laugh when "experts" suggest that older women should only wear browns and taupes (flat, murky, and muddy). I happen to love colored eyeshadow. Like everything else, shades and proper application is the key.

Even older women can have fun with hair and makeup. Here's an article I found interesting, about how aging women begin to wear darker, brighter makeup, when it's their haircolor which should be tweaked:

Here's another thought...

If you find wearing foundation feels too fake, or is too stark a look for you, being a newbie, try BB Crème.

BB Crème never really works for me...I think I'm allergic to the SPF ingredients. It irritates my eyes, and makes my nose run. But lots of people wear BB crème with no problems.

If you wear eyeglasses....please keep them updated....
decades old frames are very aging, IMO.

Hair style and color is number one thing I notice. Some women don't update their hair style or color and makes them look drab even if they maybe attractive otherwise.

I am not sure why you feel you look older than your years, since you did not pinpoint anything.

If you feel your problem is your skin, then I advise seeing a dermatologist and getting advice about skin care. You probably could use a mole check anyway, right?

Your hair should grow out in a couple of months. In the meantime ask around for recs for stylists. If you dye your hair, either pay to get a super job, or go gray. I can’t tell you how aging dry, brittle, dyed hair is.

Wear sunscreen and sunglasses.

Work out, at least a little every week.

And, IMO as a 70+ woman, it is better to try for your best look, not your youngest. We really can’t fool anyone about our age. Even with a smooth face, posture or movement will tell the tale. And 5 lbs is nothing! I wish I only had 5 lbs to lose. In many cases a full face is better looking on older women anyway.

For clothes try Chicos or J.Jill for younger styles. And don’t forget NYDJ.

IMHO trying to look "younger" may not be the real goal. Finding and cultivating a style that suits a person better at their CURRENT age seems to make more sense (at least to me). Different than trying to preserve something that is gone, not chaseable, or no longer quite appropriate.
