You have no way of knowing her weight! There is zero correlation, much less, causation, between a women's weight, and her desire to have well groomed nails.
Where do you get this idea?
He was just being a smart aleck throwing back to the OP. He (I'm thinking a 'he') wasn't being serious.
My wife works really hard and she treats herself to a massage and a mani-pedi once a month. Why not? As for me, being a manly man, I would never do such a gurlie thing. Besides, my BMI is only 23.0.
It's not a "gurlie" thing to get a massage. A massage is neither masculine or feminine. You're only depriving yourself of one of lifes many "feel-good" pleasures if you think it's too "gurlie" for a man to get a massage. Besides sex, there are not too many things in life that feels any better or as pleasureable to a human being than a nice long all-over-the-body massage. It's also a good reliever of stress. Even dogs enjoy a good massage. I say lighten up and allow yourself to enjoy a nice long relaxing "all-over-your-body" massage. Life's too short. They only cost about 65$ an hour. You'll feel better, both physically and mentally.
But I need to know..........does the obesity epidemic in the US have anything to do with this. Like really, are many people just too fat nowadays to clips their own toenails?
My guess is they get a manicure because a specialist can do the nails better than the customer can and/or it's a form of relaxation that doesn't cost a small fortune.
I will say that if a person is going to wear flip-flops into an eating establishment, especially a man, they need to be sure their toe nails are pedicured clean and neat and trimmed and their feet doesn't look gross. Ain't too many things that are less considerate than the sight of an overweight, middle aged man in a restaraunt wearing flip flops with ugly, nasty, gross looking size 12 feet and blue/black toenails.

Nail salons popping up everywhere (and yes, in some areas there are multiple salons in a block) -- just make me also think of other ancillary issues:
-- American lifestyle creep in general. When I was growing up decades (and decades) ago, I really don't think the average middle-class person went to a salon for professional manicures and pedicures.
-- Many -- if not most people who ARE paying others for manicures and pedicures likely should be putting that money to savings and retirement accounts. I've always marveled that people who say they can't save any money pay for manis/pedis. But that's no different from people who don't save but have the latest cell phone, largest TV on the block, every sports cable package, etc. Heck I don't save enough myself, but I eat out a lot. Most people, I'd imagine have something they'll spend money on, even if they probably should be saving that money.
That said, IF I had money to burn, I'd get all kinds of pampering every month:
-- Once a week massage, once a month mani/pedi, and monthly full body mud wraps/body scrubs....you bet I would IF I could afford it.
I just like sticking my two middle toes up the unsuspecting pedicurist's nostrils when he or she isn't paying attention. I get so few opportunities to do that, so I really have to opt for a salon environment and pay for it.
We all laugh and laugh at the shenanigans. Good times, good times.
Ask a woman that is 8 or 9 months pregnant how easy it is to clip one's nails.
A pregnant woman doesn't need to go to a strip mall nail salon in order to get her nails clipped, if she has a decent and caring partner.
