Those who get real winter that last few months with snow & below freezing weather, how many winter jackets do you own/use on regular base? I use to follow the theory of "I just need one, use it everyday, until it dies. Then replace it with a new one". I use this theory for shoe, jackets, purse..etc
But lately I become aware of style and fashion and variety & realize people around me have multiple of these items. That my way of life, is not the norm. So how many do you actively use and how many sits in back of your closet for "fancy event". Not counting the "i am saving it for when i lose weigh jacket" because i have those & they are useless.
The jacket is just the top layer that protects everything underneath. The rind on the orange, skin on the apple. As long as I have one hooded jacket that does it's job of cutting the wind and shedding the rain/snow that's all I need. What matters more is what you wear underneath, and you can layer or vary that as conditions demand. Never saw much point in hugely-insulated bulky coats.
Typically 2-3. I live in a mild climate now, so winter jacket is a bit theoretical.
When back east, I would own a wool overcoat for work commuting and dressier occasions, a heavy duty parka with hood for the ‘oh my god it’s cold and the wind is blowing’ days, and a lighter jacket for the sunny days that I was running errands in the car.
Like you, I would wear them until they were worn out before replacing. Because I rotated through three jackets depending on function, each would last many years.
How many winter jackets do you have? (below freezing weather)
Excluding hoodies, nine jackets/coats of varying degrees of length, depending on the mildness or severity of weather conditions and/or occasion necessity. With hoods, without hoods, with insulation, without insulation, etc. I have not had the need to buy a coat or jacket for many years. (I stick with the "classics" in all my attire and do not follow fads or trends, outerwear included).
One great big one for below 20F, one medium heavy one for below 40F.
Why would you bother with "fashion" on this item? It comes off when you go indoors anyway?
And saints preserve us from the form-fitting horizontally ribbed ones that make you look like a giant segmented annelid. Remember, too, you don't WANT a winter coat to fit tightly. That air space, that's insulation.
And WEAR A DARN HAT!!!
