I wonder, could anyone name examples of some failed fashion diffusion lines? Diffusion lines are essentially sub-brands of a major fashion brand.

Here are two that I know:
  • The original American Living brand (not the current one sold at Macy's) was a mid-range label marketed by Ralph Lauren Corporation and sold exclusively at JCPenney. It was comparable to their Chaps brand, but intended to be more exclusive while Chaps was available at multiple retailers. Apparently this brand didn't sell well.
  • The IZOD Luxury Sport line was a Macy's exclusive line exclusive line of clothes, sold at a somewhat higher price point than typical IZOD products. This line was discontinued in 2014; apparently it didn't sell well.
Any other diffusion line flops?

Marc by Marc Jacobs closed in 2015. It lasted for awhile though.

The problem was there was no reason to pay more for what looked to be the exact same stuff - save a shorter brand name. In the end it cannabilized his ability to have a luxury brand.

Dolce & Gabbana absorbed the D&G diffusion line into the main focus of the company since it did not achieve the success that Prada has had with Miu Miu, Chloé has had with See, or even Armani with Emporio Armani. I would not say that D&G failed, but it did not establish a brand identity away from the parent organization, and the concepts of the line were incorporated into the main Dolce & Gabbana offerings.
All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages.
