Tons of hair spray. You should be able to comb it back and spray it immobile.

My son's hair is about 2' long and he does a lot of technical mountaineering in the winter. He just puts it in a ponytail so the wind doesn't blow it in his face (and of course, he wears a mountaineering helmet).

I would go with the ponytail tied at the base of the skull, but honestly, if you are so worried about looking like a hippie, why do you want long hair in the first place?

An aside: I really don't understand the whole "man bun" gripe. The pictures of them I have seen look nothing at all like a real bun, they're just doubled up ponytails.

I think that the man bun just referred to when men had their hair super short on the back and sides and just grew the top section and pulled that back into a "top knot" at the very top of their hair (at the crown).
My son has long hair and he pulls it all back into a lower bun (not at the base of his head and not at the crown but somewhere in the middle) and I think he looks very handsome like that. And apparently so do the ladies

How about a hair band?

Maybe one with bunny ears. No one would think hippie or hipster.
