I used to wear these back in the 80's. actually everyone wore Nike Cortez, the red swipe and white and blue sole. Now, they are making a comeback and my 10 year daughter bought a pair. Now someone is telling me these are known for being gang sneakers. lol I find it funny but does anyone know is there is any truth to this?
Yes gang members seem to enjoy them on occasion but I don't think your 10 year old daughter will be confused for a gang member anytime soon so she should be fine. Lots of others wear them in addition to a few gang members.
Everything is a "gang symbol" if you think about it hard enough. The Amerikan culture of fear cultivated by the for-profit ma$$ media has a strong influence on the weak-minded. There's probably somebody somewhere in Amerika who thinks a plain black button-down, Wranglers and cowboy boots is a "gang symbol". It's so cliche these days as to be completely meaningless, like cancer risks. I wouldn't think about it too much.
Next to Adidas Samba, Nike Cortez are some of the classiest kicks there are.
I think they are linked to the MS-13 for the most part, but there are a lot of other fashion items linked to different gangs.
Lots of other people wear them
