Help.. I'm out of my element here. I'm in NY and my grandsons girlfriend is having a quincenera party. What is a quincenera? How do I dress? Has anyone ever been to one? thanks...

Something that you would wear to a wedding, a sweet 16 or a Bar /Bat Mitzvah.

Not formal but dressy. Men would wear suits and women semi formal wear. I am sure that a bridal shop could help you out.
You live in NYC. They will be able to help you.

Let me know what you find.

I don't know your price rage, age or body type, or how close you are to the family. When we lived in NY, we were invited to a Quincenra celebration. It was fun and people were generally semi-formal and colorfully. (women).

It's the celebration of a girl turning 15 ("quince" in Spanish). Dress like it's a party.

Love that dress! Wish I had someplace to wear it.

I went to a Quinceañera for one of my cousins in NJ years ago. It’s a Spanish/Latin American version of a Cotillion/Debutante Ball, except it’s for Fifteen-year olds instead of Sixteen to Eighteen. It’s usually formal or semi-formal in dress. Think Prom clothes or what you’d wear to a formal wedding.

Thanks for all the replies! I guess I'll just pick up a dress or something that is wedding guest dressy but not too casual or too formal. I just hope I can find a wearable pair of heels that won't kill my feet. I don't think my Keds would be appropriate for the occasion.

Oh.. gift? What do I give as a gift? Do they even give gifts? I'm assuming money because that's what is usually given at weddings and such. How much?

Yes, I know in some states giving a monetary gift would be seen as tacky, but that's the norm for where I am so don't yell at me please.

Seriously.. does Hallmark make a card for a Quincenera? I am so clueless about this whole thing.. Lol

Sheena, that dress is very pretty... I wish I had the body for it..
