I don't understand the whole "how do I know how it is going to look if I don't see it on a model?" thing.

Go to the store and try it on and you will have your answer.

The only situation I can see is maybe if you are ordering from an online retailer … but Target has stores all over the country. TRY IT ON if you want to know how it will look.

I and others object to the subtext of those ads. The only solution is to not use morbidly obese models in ads unless one is searching specifically for large sizes being modeled. Whatever visual preferences someone has, there's a point when it's clearly medical and shouldn't be condoned.

By the way, on manufacturer websites, instead of models, visuals could be like mannequins but with settings users could modify closer to their own measurements.
I did not see any morbidly obese models in the Target ad.

You make a lot of unsubstantiated assumptions about something you know little about.

Not every fat person is morbidly obese. Let’s start with that. And nit every fat person has severe health problems
Not every fat person has severe health problems currently, sure. But they likely will one day.

There is a very strong likelihood that MOST fat people will have health problems.

Very few fat people remain healthy for most of their lives.

Being fat exacerbates the chances.

None of that has anything to do with ads for clothes. Those are personal issues.

Do you look at a small model and start wondering about the high instances of depression among models?

I wonder if they have eating disorders sometimes, yes.

I don't think ads should use too thin models OR too fat models.

Why can't we just get some average looking folks?

Yes it's a personal issue, but target is indirectly promoting an unhealthy way of life. I would be saying the same thing if the model were too thin.

What's wrong is doughy women but no men with beer guts or even smokers. Why are they leaving out the other gender and other unhealthy lifestyles?

Seems to me you're missing the point of advertising.

People generally don't smoke in clothing ads.

Men have always had big and tall ads and clothing.

Very often I've been disappointed by how something which looks fantastic on a model doesn't fit me at all, and whether or not that's the case is surprisingly unpredictable. And yes, it would certainly be less expensive.

But I also admit that in general I have no great desire to look at clothes, shop for clothes, or think about clothes.

Fair enough but clearly if marketers believed it was as effective, they'd be taking the cheaper route, so it stands to reason that people want to see clothing modeled on human beings, presumably to see how it looks.
