My friend is having a destination wedding in a few months that we can’t really afford to go to but we are going. It’s a 5 pm wedding on a beach and reception on a patio. I have a nice black off the shoulder sun dress I was going to wear my friends tells me I can’t wear black. Is it really that wrong to wear black? My other friend showed me her dress which is similar but in blue.

It's not typical for a daytime beach wedding. People these days will tell you to wear what you want, but if the friend who told you this is the bride, I'd find something else.

Just show up in a black bikini, early, and hope that others do the same.

Traditionally, black was not an acceptable color to wear to a wedding, since it's a mourning color. And you didn't want to appear to be mourning at a wedding.

I suspect you meant to say you can't really afford to attend, but are going anyway.

It's a beach wedding - it seems you must have something that's not black that you can wear?

Many people don't like black at a wedding... unless, of course, you're a man in a black suit, and then it's okay and possibly even expected. Which is why I scoff at the rule (all of these 'what color you can wear" rules are only for women, of course).

*shrug* It's not really all that hard to follow the rule of "don't wear black to a wedding". I would think everyone would have something in their closet that's appropriate to wear to a wedding.

1. Don't wear your own wedding dress to someone else's wedding
2. Don't wear pajamas or a bathing suit
3. Don't wear black, if it's a traditional wedding

Wear what you want! Black is not inappropriate for a wedding.

It won't be dark till well after the ceremony.

You don't wear white to a wedding, and you don't wear black. Those really are the two main conventions. Surely you can find something else.
