There. I said it. I dislike polyester "performance" polo shirts. And polyester "performance" tees. and just about anything polyester. There are dozens of brands of fabrics that are some variation of the words "cool" "dry" "fast drying" "wicks moisture" etc.

They are all just a form of polyester, and polyester makes my skin crawl in hot weather.

I like cotton. Yes, simple 100% cotton - "the fabric of our lives." It feels right when it is hot out. Of course, color matters for comfort - wearing a black shirt in the summer in Phoenix or Las Vegas isn't wise. While white is boring, it is also more comfortable, along with other light colors.

I'm I alone? Does anyone else dislike polyester and prefer cotton?

If you have a perfect body, then those clingy polo shirts can look good.

News flash - most of us don't have perfect bodies. Those who don't, should not wear those clingy skin tight shirts.

Nope - cotton for me, all the way. Polyester has its place, and its place is being reinforced by fiberglass in a boat hull.

No, you are not alone. I will confess that cotton/poly is better for me, since I tend to shrink the 100% cotton in the laundry. But I'd rather risk 100% cotton to these 100% polyester things I see practically everywhere. My rough skin 'snags' on the cloth. There's also the whole "don't get too close to an open flame" thing with synthetics. Rather than burn, they sort of "melt" and stick right to the wearer's skin as it melts.

I don't like rubber clothing, period. 100% cotton tees, jeans (if you can find them)...
Have you ever gotten up close to someone wearing this "performance fabric" during a hot, humid day, or in the gym??? That sweat has to go somewhere, and it's trapped in the fabric and stinks to high heaven. EEEWWWWW....

Yeah, I'll wear poly/cotton blend sometimes.

I'm now seeing some clingy tight men's jeans and other casual pants that have 3% spandex in them while the rest is cotton. I don't like these either, as I don't really like form-fitting clothing (the family jewels like to breathe).

I just don't get it.

Depends. Point of a (good) poly or blend is the wicking. If you want to be go around in a sloppy sponge, wear cotton. That's exactly what you want in an undershirt if you're trying to avoid sweaty pits. It provides some barrier soaking up sweat whereas a wicking synthetic is just going to pass it straight through. On the other hand if you're say running in heat/humidity, it's probably not what you want. Running in a soggy sponge isn't very comfortable. Your nips will thank you for not wearing cotton. And as manly as running around with blood stains from your chaffed nips is, it ain't worth it. Go synthetic for sure.

I like my workout shirts to be a good poly or poly blend. I wouldn't want to workout or do an OCR (where you are often submerged in water) in 100% cotton.

"Toxic chemicals aside, synthetic fabrics simply don't breathe, and anyone who's worn polyester on a hot summer day is probably well aware of that. The fabric also traps odors, which Popular Science explained in an article. Not to go into too much gory detail, but skin germs found in sweat feast on chemicals, which synthetic fibers can't absorb, therefore creating an environment for smelly bacteria to grow. All signs point to polyester being the number one worst fabric for skin."

Your body is trying to tell you something.

Listen to it.

Yep, I too cannot stand wearing a plastic shirt. Or whatever it is. I feel myself getting hot and prickly as soon as I put it on. I will (and do) happily run long miles with a soaking wet 100% cotton shirt. Once it is soaked, it is cool! A nice breeze, a cool wet shirt, really helps.

It is really a drag that all the race shirts now are all smell trapping synthetic fabric. I think the wicking property is a myth, all I feel when I have worn that fabric is little rivers of sweat running down me, where exactly is this wicking happening? I'd rather have cotton mopping it up, lol. I will concede however that the Balega socks with the padding and are synthetic, are good and comfortable.

I'm the same with my street wear wardrobe, all natural fibers.

I remember reading that mountain climbers would never wear cotton. They called it the "death fabric". I don't care for man made materials but it is very hard finding something that is 100% cotton or 100% linen these days. I think part of it may be that it wrinkles and most people don't want to iron clothes anymore.
