Zales has reasonable prices when they're having a sale and they can certify that a gem is authentic and tell you whether it's natural, man-made, etc.

I agree with others who suggested Etsy, but you're definitely taking chances when it comes to the technical quality and authenticity of stones from there. But I have bought opals from there before, and if they were fake or of lower quality, I sure could not tell. Obviously though...I'm no expert. And I was buying them because I liked them, not as some sort of an investment, so authenticity took a backseat to basic "ooh, shiny pretty colors" joy for me. And the prices were good.
