That VOX image isn't granny panties. Those are just sort of a teeny bit wider than bikinis.

These are granny panties:

Well, grannies don't look like they used to, so I guess it makes sense that granny panties wouldn't either.

But those at the top of the article are just briefs, not even close to actual granny panties.

Those are not even "briefs". They're just wider than bikinis, barely. I think they're called "hipster".

Leave it to NPR to not know the difference between granny pants and hi-cut panties.

Me too. I hope real "granny pants" come back in style though. Those are made of comfy cotton and are high waisted, very comfortable. We tried all the types long ago--low rise with elastic that cut into your hips, nylon that made you sweat, tap pants, a few others that I can't remember, but just plain old cotton underpants are the best! It only bothers me a little bit that they now call them "granny pants."

Wore them post-c-section, couldn't care less about the stylishness. Just needed the buffer where my stitches were without a waistband anywhere near the incision to irritate it.

The initial pic is NOT "granny panties," sorry.

Those are not even close to granny panties. They are half the size and the wrong fabric. Granny panties are made of silk.

IMO...
1) There is no "style" or "cut" of panty actually called granny panty. Unless that's just what someone decided to call larger sized briefs.
When "cuter" styles of briefs became stylish....and of course to increase sales of the new fashion panty styles, makers had to disparage the style that had always been just high waisted briefs.

2) Even when grannies are referred to -- the first photo is not it.
3) The second photo is what some manufacturers call high-cut briefs.

(Just like years ago when other styles, low-waist jeans, hipsters, etc, came into being, high-waisted "soccer mom" jeans had to be made fun of, so people would think they're ugly and not good anymore. And of course manufacturers count on people being into that for fashion, something that doesn't matter and is all smoke and mirrors anyway.)
