Since I live alone all of it will go to a dumpster. When my mom was alive she told me to throw out all her shoes. I did. The rest including her tooth brush I kept. It gives me comfort to touch her things.

Why can't we have an estate sale while we are still living? I like to see the money.

Absolutely no reason why you can't have an estate (type) sale while you are living. But it's an open question whether it will net a whole lot of money. People have too much stuff already and the ones who are buying things are usually not choosing old fashioned and outdated items. Actual antiques are different, but you would probably do better working directly with a dealer on those. But non-antique 50 year old furniture? If it's mid century modern, then it would sell. If it's reproduction early American or generic 1980s oak or similar? The reality is that anyone who wants it probably already has it.

We got rid of so much stuff when my mom downsized last year, and we (my mom and my sibling and me) are all very glad that massive undertaking is done. Yes, she still has a 2 bedroom condo with a fair amount of stuff, but nothing compared to what was in the 3200 sq ft house. When the inevitable happens, what is left will be far, far easier to deal with. And she's still chipping away it it now too - realizing that things she hasn't used in the year since she moved maybe weren't actually worth keeping after all.

I'm coming up on 5 years in my house, and while I'm not moving, there is a part of me that wishes I were since that is the only way I seem to get motivated enough to do the kind of wholesale purge I should be doing again! lol!

Too much work. I like to leave home for the weekend and come back to an almost empty house. I suppose a small fire would do the job too but too much collateral damage.

So hire an estate sale company.

I can't either, but I still kept my mother's little make-up bag with her things in it. Just to have it, not to use it. After many years, it still smells like her when I open it up - not very often, just every 5 or 6 years. It's a nice memory to have and it doesn't take up much room at all.
