I'm curious if anyone else (men or women) now carries a smaller bag, briefcase, or backpack than they used to.

I can remember at a previous job I carried a backpack everyday. The bag I carry now is no bigger than the small bag on the front part of a standard sized backpack (if you were able to take it off by itself). But the funny thing is, I can't remember what I used to even use the bag for. At one point I even bought a newer one. It wasn't because the first one wore out. I just wanted a slightly larger one with more pockets and organizers inside.

But I still have no idea what I used it for. I never took my lunch to work. I didn't ride the bus. I didn't have papers or materials that I carried to and from work or anything like that. I didn't carry a music player of any kind. Basically just junk I guess.

Does anyone else remember carrying more stuff in the past?

Yes.

Now my calendar, camera, and rolodex are all in my iPhone. I use a small cross-body bag now and love it.

I used to carry a larger purse too. Back in my "I'm a single mother now" mode, my kids' needs were the most important thing, so I basically had one large purse. Black usually. I had all kinds of crazy stuff in it. Bills, some make up, my brush, my keys, and toys. I always had one of my boy's toys in my purse. (Cause ray guns are not appropriate in Sunday school.)

Same here. I never had a HUGE purse, just an average size one, but I have gone down to a smaller bag. Wallet, checkbook, phone. I do take a larger tote bag in the car but not into stores.

I think a huge purse makes you look matronly.

I see mostly younger women, mothers of school age children , carry big totes, almost the exact same kind. I love my Bagelini bag, small and compact with nice pockets where I need them. I wear mine cross best style.

Yes. I always loved the hobo style bags, but in the last couple of years, I've been more interested in the crossbody style. I don't personally wear the strap diagonally across because I've always liked an arm strap, but I've cut down on wearing some big old bag.

I still carry a large purse (re: Hobo bag). My wallet is bigger than most purses these days.

I am a mom. I carried a big bag to keep all that stuff. Now I may purposely carry a small bag so I can say “you brought it, you carry it”. Youngest is 8.

No, my bags seem to be getting bigger, if anything. I always manage to take loads of stuff with me, when I go out. You know - just in case I need it!
