My son-in-law has several tattoos, one is a lightning bolt down his left ring finger. He's very sensitive of any criticism, especially coming from me (natch). My daughter recently got a tiny one on one ankle of a palm tree, because they moved to the beach.
When I was looking at it, my SIL said "I didn't influence her, Mom" very forcefully and sarcastically, even though I had not said a word to him, so I'm hesitant to just ask him
Does it have any meanings, other than purely decorative self- expression? Thanks--
Why don't you just ask him? I think here are various meanings to the lighting bolt symbol so it would be hard to know without personally knowing your SIL. I think if you just straight out ask him without any side commentary, he might welcome the dialogue.
Sounds reasonable, but as I said, he is sensitive to criticism and makes unkind comments about other people contradicting him. I'll think about how to word my question. Thank you!
You should be able to talk with him without sounding critical. Maybe even say to him, “Look I know you’re a bit sensitive about this subject, but I’d love to hear the meanings behind your tattos.” Seems to me most people are very willing to share that, unless it’s extremely personal.
Just let him know that you don’t judge him at all.

That's going to set him on guard to react defensively before she even gets to the question.

A simple straightforward question shouldn't come across as criticism or contradiction OP. What about asking a tattoo artist about meanings attached to lightning bolts or doing a bit of reading for yourself first? Then couch your question using that information? Something like:
"I've heard that lightning bolt tattoos can symbolize different things including a), b), c)... I'm curious. What meaning do you attach to yours?"

I did some Googling.....In prison, a lightning bolt tattoo means he's a white supremacist!
