Hey there. Just wondering what others felt about this. I went to the Gap yesterday for some pants. When I went to the fitting room, I was asked my name by a hovering, multi question asking clerk, and it was posted on a whiteboard by the fitting room door. I feel this is invasive, and a bit much. Is anyone else bothered by this??

I've never experienced this at the Gap, but at other clothing stores, and I'm not really bothered by it but find it kind of odd. I'm not sure what they need it for. You can always give out a fake name if you're not comfortable giving out your real name :P.

Yeah, I know. But it just took me off guard, and instinctively I gave my real name.

I would have come right out and ask her, what she needed your name for? And why all the questions.

I have noticed this once at one of my fav stores Express. But it was just one location here, not all. What really gets me is the OVERwhelming desire to help me find something. I know EXACTLY what I am looking for. I mean, I like customer service but dang let me browse for 5 secs and then as soon as I pick up something "would you like us to start you a fitting room?" I'm like, let me shop in peace. If I need something I will ask.

Our Gap doesn't do this, but I agree it's kind of strange. I would probably give them porn star name.

They do this also at Old Navy as well. This is done so that they could call you by your name to ask you is everything alright. "Emily", Is eveything fitting o.k.? "Emily", Could I bring you a different size? Nothing odd by this , it's nice to know that they are calling you by your name. People are put more at ease when someones knows their name. They are targeting those people who want to feel comfortable.

I would just say - No, my name is none of your business and I resent being asked for it.
I also never give out my zip code when they ask for it in stores, Why should I help their marketing program? They are not paying me.

That's odd. Really odd. It's like the people in many grocery stores have to say, "Thank you, Ms. Cooper." That always bothered me, because I certainly didn't introduce myself to them. I've gotten over it, but I think I'd be a bit thrown if someone at The Gap asked me my name. Just give the most inappropriate name you can think of - one they'll feel uncomfortable using, but will have to. You know, nothing that falls into the category of profanity. I'll have to ruminate on that one.
