If Gottschalks goes out of business, then who will replace it?
Macy's or Dillards? Bealls or Kohls?
I don't think Bealls or Kohl's since they are too small to fit into Gottschalk's locations.
I think Dillards currently is capible of fitting to all of their store's formats, but right now they are financially not able to.
Macy's is financially able to take over Gottschalks, but I don't know if they are going to unveil their prototype stores that are 55,000sq. ft. (2 stories) and 110,000sq.ft. (1 story) and that are free-standing locations (not in malls).

It's only a matter of how long it will take this economy to drag down Gottschalks. With only 60 stores, and being the second to last California department store left to go. Mervyn's and Dillards I think will come out of this recession, but I don't see Gottschalks coming out.
I think Dillards will be able to barely get themselves together, and then buy out Gottschalks so they stay on top. Dillards is going to be comming to more markets in California, so get ready everyone.
I'm not sure Macy's is ready for the non-mall approach yet. So far all they have is their Macy's Furniture Gallery which is free-standing.
Wal-Mart, Cotco, Macy's, Kohl's, and Dillards I hear are the companies that are doing best in the market right now. Probably the ones that are going to do the expanding and conquering too.
