because?

Some of us are the same size we were in high school. Junior dept doesn't have to mean we buy the teen styles. Sheeeesh. Do you shop in that dept? If not, then you know not of what you speak.

I am nearly 40 and have to draw the line:

I admit there are some wearable things at Forever 21 and have shopped there. Overall though the store isn't where I'm at anymore. Size isn't part of the issue; I weigh what I've weighed since I was teenager. I just don't feel good about shopping in a store obviously geared towards teens and twenty somethings. Returns are especially a pain.

Well I get some of my clothes in the kids' section, forget the teens ! I can fit a Kids size 14/16 but that doesnt mean I'll be wearing Dora the Explorer Tshirts ! I buy stuff that looks nice but not childish . I am 5'3" and the cute pants are perfect length for me .

As long as any female can fit into junior sizes, I see no reason to stop. I do think, however, that selection of style is important. If you're a 50-something junior sized lady, you don't want to be wearing anything that's too juvenile looking.

My SIL (mid-40s) is junior sized. Had her twin boys in her early 40s. Well, her size is fine, but she's beginning to age quickly. Wrinkles, cellulite, lots of sun damage, etc. So, it seems she's trying to recapture her youth or just look like a younger Mommy by wearing little ruffled mini skirts (knit fabric) and teeny bopper style t-shirts with little sayings or cutesy pics on them. It just makes her aging stand out even more, IMO.

Now, if you're 40 or 50-ish and still look like you're 20, you can probably get away with wearing clothes like that.

I'm at the age (21) where the line between juniors and misses is getting blurry. I'll admit that I was totally into the crazy teenager trends (lace up jeans, anyone?) a couple of years ago but I'm so embarrassed to see those pictures now, especially since I'm a fashion major. To me, most juniors clothes almost never look good or nice, they just look ok. Not only is it the design, but it's the fit and, most importantly, the quality.

Every six months/ major season change I go through all my clothes, switch them with in season stuff and donate things that don't fit or that I don't want anymore. It's amazing the amount of nylon and polyester things I've bought because they were cheap and in style. If you can't iron your pants because they'll scorch, it's time to shop in a new section. If you have to wash your shirt inside out so the glitter or other shiny adornments don't fall off, it's time to shop in a new section. If you have any hips at all, it's time to shop in a new section.

I think stores like Express, Charlotte Russe and Forever 21 (sometimes) aren't exclusively junior's because to me the maximum age is for juniors is 18-19 and the clothing is revealing, showy and/or immature (ie., Happy Bunny). I like to think of them more like TV marketing, they're geared towards the 18-24 demographic. I'm not going to lie though, I see a lot of older women wearing juniors clothing and feel some secondhand embarrassment for them. Unless they're just basic unadorned shirts and pants, you can almost always tell when something comes from the juniors section and it don't look good.

You know what's sad? When I was 14, I wore a size 14. I'm 32 and I can now wear a 7/8 shirt.

I think you can wear juniors until it starts to look age inappropriate. 40 year olds who look 40 should not wear Hello Kitty belly shirts, even if you have the body for it. A basic pair of jeans is fine.
