has anyone ever made a purchase from one of the online discount jewelers? i have been looking at getting a tag heuer waf1112 that retails for $1400. several of the discount jewelers online and on ebay have the same watch for $900. they claim all their watches are brand new (not refurbished) and have simply been "decoded." has anyone purchased such an item, and are they authentic/

Can Tag tell you if the companies are authorized dealers? Also, check out the company on Manta.com.

My husband bought me a Tag 8-9 years ago and I love it! Have never had any trouble with it...good luck!

I have... several times. I've never been burned by any of them (yet).

One of them was a Tag Heuer CJF2110.BA0576 which is a Swiss Made automatic Valjoux 7750 chronograph movement. I saved around $800 plus tax. Don't remember the exact amount. It was about 6 years ago. You should ask about the warranty. Some places will cover the warranty themselves while others are "Authroized Dealers" and all warranty work will be covered by the manufacturer. As stated in someone elses post, try to stay with an Authorized Dealer. You'll avoid a lot of potential headaches.

It's been decoded? Sounds very fake. I also would never trust a website that sells watches with a warranty allowing only their exclusive repair service for their watches. A real Tag can be repaired by any authorized Tag retailer. In fact, I was just online at Breitling and their front page warns that 99% of all Breitlings sold online are fakes.

If you want to save $$ on a real Tag, I have a suggestion - you can purchase Tag Heuers and other fine watches in St. Thomas/St. John USVI for less than what you'd pay in the states. They are listed as certified retailers by the manufacturer and are legitimate places to buy authentic timepieces. While traveling I purchased an Omega and a Breitling from an authorized dealer there and I *think* they can do transactions over the phone (shhhhh!). The savings is similar to what you were quoted - we saved about 35% on our watches and a quote we got this spring (while in the USVI) couldn't be matched by our local jewelers.

Since I don't want to advertise retailers, you'll have to search online for where to go. To help you out, I know Omega and Breitling dealers also sell Tags and you can find their certified USVI retailers on their websites. Anyhow, it wouldn't hurt to call and check.

HTH!!

Dont buy anything for that much unless its from an big name dealer. Monte Blanc stopped selling its watches and pens online and only do phone orders because of the "knock off" problem.

There are ways to tell if its a fake...But thats if you are already holding it and spent 900.
If you are going to spend that much just save a little more and get the real deal from a seller you can trust.
