Help me justify spending $85 w/o tax on an adorable down vest when I saw a similar one at Target for $18. Granted NOT the same brand and fake down. It's not as if I would be spending my kid's college money or anything, it just seems sooo expensive. Thoughts?

I wanted the one at J Crew, $118.00 I think. Instead I ordered two at Land's End. The $29.00 down vest and another dressier one for $39.00. I love the second one, I haven't received the less expensive one yet. I got free shipping too!

Depends on if it's for fashion or warmth. A higher quality, more expensive down vest will keep you warmer and than a cheap fashion vest and will last longer than a cheap down vest.

The down vest I wear is Patagonia, it cost about $125. However, it is very warm, has a cute contoured cut and, because of their lifetime warranty if anything EVER goes wrong with it all I have to do is bring it back for a refund/exchange. Can't beat that!

Fashion vests don't interest me much, but if part of the idea is to stay warm they can't be beat. In the early winter/early spring time in Chicago I would wear mine all the time when I didn't want to bother with a coat or wanted a cute sporty look. Also, even in the winter I would wear it if I were going to be in my car a lot and didn't want the bulk of a coat. But, just make sure it is versatile in style/color enough to wear many different things under it.

Justified by Dnaomi!! Thanks! It will be for fashion and warmth. I don't know about the lifetime warranty. It's by North Face and it would be my first potential experience with that brand. I would expect that it would hold up well.

I bought two of those JCrew ones last year. Love them and gets lots of use out of them. But I don't spend money like that anymore...

Love J Crew but I've put the breaks on spending big time this fall, that's why I went for the Land's End vests. They are 70% goose down 30% feathers with a temp rating of 5 to 20 degrees. That's warm enough for my part of the country.

If you have to justify it than you can't afford it, or its toying with how you could use the $$ for other things. I spend that much for a great slacks, sweater and darn more for shoes. I do believe in quality and clothing that are timeless. At least I could justify the cost, if it lasts for several years.

Vests never go out of style.

I get a lot of use out of my down vests. I wear them in the house to keep warm. In the fall, they are good over a sweatshirt to keep my body warm. I buy most of my clothes at thrift shops now. My days of crazy spending are gone.

I think that if it wouldn't be a hardship on your finances and you love it, then get it. I really believe that you get what you pay for and if it's something you will wear for a few seasons then it's worth the money.

By the way, I have vest envy. I can't find one that doesn't make me look boxy because of the boobage.

I have my down vest that I bought 25 years ago! Red . . . and still looks great. And I spent somewhere around $100 for it way back then! But . . . it has gotten 25 years of use. It is a classic and still in perfect shape . . . and I am glad I invested in it.
